I’ve used it to brainstorm vacation ideas, write thoughtful thank-you notes, and even organize a grocery list based on what’s already in my fridge. It doesn’t replace your judgment or creativity. It gives you a head start and makes everything faster. 

How to Personalize ChatGPT — Even the Free Version

The secret to getting great answers from ChatGPT is simple: tell it who you are and what role you’d like it to play. If you create a free account, your chats are saved and you can use the Personalization settings.

In the Personalization panel, you can add a few basics; how you’d like ChatGPT to respond, your interests, and your general tone. This helps ChatGPT tailor its answers to feel more natural and relevant.

These settings are available in the free version. The paid version adds longer character limits and a long-term memory, so its responses can improve over time as it gets to know more about you.

Once your basics are set, start a new chat and tell it the role you want it to take, like this:

  • Meal planner: “You’re my meal planner. Help me plan dinners for two people that are high in protein and easy to make.”
  • Email editor: “You’re my writing partner. Make this message sound polite but confident.”

  • Brainstorm gift or trip ideas. It can find creative options based on the person’s interests or your travel style.
  • Learn something new in plain English. Ask it to explain anything—like “What does protein loading mean for women over 50?”—and you’ll get an easy-to-understand answer.
  • Double-check what you read online. If you see a bold claim on social media or in the news, ask ChatGPT to explain the context or outline what’s known and what’s still debated. The paid version can even search the web and cite sources, which makes it especially useful for fact-checking. Just remember to confirm important details with a trusted site.

I recently used ChatGPT to figure out what to do with a jar of caramelized red onion jam I’d bought on impulse. It suggested sautéing mushrooms with a spoonful of the jam—it was delicious. Once you start using it for little everyday moments like that, you’ll see how practical (and surprisingly creative) it can be.
